Although fly fishing put the Makhangoa Community Camp on the map, the venue offers arguably one of the most authentic and pristine Lesotho Mountain experiences on offer. For a family holiday in Lesotho, Rosehip Cottage is an intimate and comfortable base from which to enjoy the incredible environment and rich culture of the area. Be it mountain biking, trail running, swimming and tubing in the river, cultural visits to the village, day hikes, overnight camping trips up the Bokong valley, or just kicking back and taking in the incredible view of the mountains, valley, and river with a glass of wine or a cold beer, Rosehip Cottage offers it all.
The Rosehip Cottage is allocated 2 rods (of the available 8 rods per day) to fly fish on Bokong River, under the supervision of the community River Rangers.
Fully guided fly fishing can be arranged with the in house African Waters professional guides, should there be availability.
Prime fly fishing season is Sept to April. All fly fishing is strictly catch and release.
R250/p per day (includes river ranger and angling permit) – subject to availability in prime season (Nov – May)
Whether you are a hardcore twitcher or just enjoy birds, Lesotho is a place where birds are a constant part of the day, their ever-present singing often supporting the tinkle of cowbells that is the peaceful chorus of the hills. Being a high altitude environment, the montane ecosystem is home to some highland specials.
These include the Drakensberg Rockjumper, Mountain Wheatear, Drakensberg Siskin, Verreaux’s Eagle, Bearded Vulture, and Ground Woodpecker. Even for non-birding guests, the rich birdsong in the mountain mornings is a happy, calming music of the most beautiful kind and appreciated by everyone.
Experience the wonders of the Bokong Valley by taking a multi night pony trek. Aimed at the fit and adventurous family, this is a great way to explore the upper Bokong Valley. Speak to us beforehand for more info on associated costs and logistics.
